In 2009, HMK Bilcon delivered multiple customised 3-ton off-road trailers with hardtop to the Norwegian Defence. Developed to support the transport of ATVs for scouting operations, the solution provided a practical and robust capability tailored to real operational use.
At the time, the Norwegian Defence had introduced all-terrain vehicles to support reconnaissance and scouting tasks. These units needed to be transported efficiently to operational areas and deployed quickly in the field.
Existing solutions did not meet the requirement. Standard trailers were not suited for off-road conditions, nor did they provide the protection needed against snow, water, and harsh environments. A solution was needed that combined mobility, protection, and ease of use in demanding terrain.
A direct and responsive solution
Unlike larger procurement projects, this requirement did not go through a full tender process. Instead, it was developed through direct dialogue between HMK Bilcon and the Norwegian Defence, building on an existing relationship established through earlier deliveries.
This allowed the project to move very quickly from requirement to solution.
HMK Bilcon adapted an existing off-road trailer platform and customised it to meet the specific need. The result was a robust and practical system designed for field use.
The trailer featured a rear ramp, allowing ATVs to be driven directly onto the trailer bed. A hinged hardtop structure could be opened for loading and closed to protect equipment during transport. The design enabled fast deployment while ensuring protection from environmental conditions.
Built for off-road use and compliant with NATO requirements, the solution also included the necessary towing and electrical connections for military operations. It was not an off-the-shelf product, but a tailored solution based on a proven platform.
Designed for real-world conditions
The development process focused on usability in the field.
By working closely with the customer, HMK Bilcon ensured that the solution reflected how the equipment would actually be used. The ability to load, secure, and deploy ATVs quickly was central to the design.
This practical approach reduced complexity and improved efficiency in operation, allowing personnel to focus on the task rather than the equipment.
A result built on trust and still relevant today
Many types of approved units were delivered.
While the product addressed a specific requirement, the process behind it is just as important. The decision to work directly with HMK Bilcon reflected a level of trust built through previous collaboration.
