In 2022, HMK Bilcon participated in a tender published by the Swedish Defence to deliver a new generation of refueller tankers for aircraft and helicopter operations. Built on a 21 m³ tank design and integrated across multiple chassis platforms, the solution provided a mobile, high-capacity refuelling capability aligned with rapidly evolving operational demands.
The requirement emerged in response to a changing security environment. Increased geopolitical pressure and the need to scale defence readiness meant that fuel logistics had to become faster, more flexible, and more mobile.
For the Swedish Defence, this included the ability to refuel aircraft not only at established airbases, but also from dispersed locations such as road networks. This placed new demands on both capacity and mobility.
At the same time, the solution had to comply with varying national regulations across Europe, integrate with different vehicle platforms, and perform reliably in harsh environmental conditions.
A collaborative and integrated solution
The project was initiated through direct dialogue, building on previous deliveries and a proven relationship. The solution needed to be delivered quickly, integrated seamlessly, and perform without compromise.
HMK Bilcon delivered a 21 m³ refueller tanker system designed for aircraft and helicopter refuelling, integrated on a Volvo chassis. The platform was also designed to fit a Scania chassis with only minor adjustments.
The development process involved close collaboration not only with the customer, but also with the chassis supplier. This ensured that the tank system and vehicle platform worked as a fully integrated solution.
The design focused on maximising fuel capacity within regulatory constraints while maintaining mobility. This allowed each unit to deliver as much fuel as possible without exceeding national road limits, supporting efficient deployment across different countries.
Tested for real-world conditions
A key part of the project was ensuring reliable performance in extreme environments.
Full-scale climate testing was carried out down to approximately -32°C, validating the performance of the complete system under realistic conditions. This process also revealed weaknesses in certain components, leading to further development and refinement.
To strengthen quality control, HMK Bilcon invested in in-house testing capabilities, including deep-freeze testing of individual components. This ensured that all parts used in the system could meet the required performance standards before installation.
Each unit was also subject to final inspection and validation in collaboration with the customer and chassis supplier before delivery.
Delivered with speed, flexibility, and reliability
The full delivery was completed within the agreed project timeline, with all units supplied within four years of the initial requirement.
The solution provided the Swedish Defence with a mobile refuelling capability designed for rapid deployment and flexible use across different operational scenarios. Beyond the initial delivery, the project also led to further contracts for related fuel systems, reflecting continued confidence in both the solution and the delivery approach.
That same approach remains highly relevant today. In an operational environment where mobility, speed, and reliability are critical, fuel logistics must support rapid deployment without delay.
