From January 1, 2025, Denmark has introduced a new kilometer-based and CO₂-differentiated road toll for trucks.
The toll applies to trucks with a technically permissible total weight of 12 tons or more and is part of the government’s ambition to promote greener road transport by reducing CO₂ emissions. Initially, the road toll covers most of the state road network and parts of the municipal road network, totaling approximately 10,900 km of roads.
Calculation of the Road Toll
The toll is calculated based on several factors:
- The vehicle’s CO₂ emissions: Trucks with higher CO₂ emissions will be subject to a higher toll.
- The vehicle’s weight: The technically permissible total weight affects the toll level.
- Kilometers driven: The toll is based on the actual number of kilometers driven on toll roads.
- Environmental zones: Driving in designated environmental zones, such as Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Odense, Aarhus, and Aalborg, results in a higher toll.
Payment Methods
To pay the road toll, hauliers can use satellite-based GNSS equipment, a toll box, or an app provided by approved service providers. This equipment must be installed by January 1, 2025. Alternatively, a digital road toll ticket can be purchased before each journey on toll roads.
Route Planning
If a road toll ticket is purchased, it is important to note that a specific route must be booked. The driver cannot deviate from this route, as the ticket is only valid for the designated journey.
Handling of fuel tank trucks under construction
When new tank trucks are being built at HMK Bilcon, road tolls must be paid once the vehicle is registered and license plates are mounted. License plates must be installed after the vehicle has passed inspection. If the vehicle does not have GNSS equipment installed and activated, a road toll ticket must be purchased. Our project managers will coordinate this process.
Fuel tank trucks for service and tanktransferrals
For tank trucks arriving in Denmark from Sweden, Norway, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Greenland, road tolls must be paid from the ferry terminal. Our service department ensures that a road toll ticket is booked if the vehicle does not have GNSS equipment.
Control and Sanctions
License plates will be automatically scanned to verify whether the correct road toll has been paid. Failure to pay may result in a fine of DKK 4,500.
Future Expansions
It is planned that, from January 1, 2027, the road toll will also apply to trucks with a technically permissible total weight of 3.5 tons or more. Furthermore, the toll is expected to cover the entire public road network from January 1, 2028.
